Daniel Pan--teachers, classmates, and friends' memory

Emily Berry-Elmore (5th grade teacher)Daniel

Words cannot express the loss the community of San Ramon has suffered. As Daniel's teacher I knew a bright child full of smiles and laughter. Daniel lived his life in a hunt for knowledge, always yearning to know more and encouraging his classmates to do the same. He was a boy with a mind and desire for knowledge beyond his young years. He was always searching for answers of the unknown and always kept the class on his toes. Things will not be the same without him in our class or school community. Daniel was a unique student and one that will never be forgotten. I have never seen a child devour and remember a book the way Daniel did. I will strive to have all of my students enjoy reading in the way that he did.

Janelle Melin (4th grader teacher):

I am truly heartbroken at the loss of Daniel. I had the pleasure of being his 4th grade teacher and knew immediately that he would be a student I would never forget. Daniel's laughter and love of reading was absolutely contagious. He was refreshingly honest and was always ready to offer his opinion on things. I will really miss hearing him say, "Actually, Mrs. Melin, I think..." He will not be forgotten.
I am heartbroken that we will never again be able to chat about new books and compare notes. Your smile and laughter were enough to keep me going for the rest of the day. I am touched and honored that you invited me to your winter breakfast. I will keep your poem up in my class always and every time I open a new book, I’ll think of you.

Eileen Hock(School Librarian):

What a hole he will leave at Montevideo. He was such a joy! I loved it when he came to the library (which was often) to check out book and just talk to me.
I literally fall in love with your son the first time I saw his face. He had such a bright and happy spirit. And he was so much fun. I loved to hear his voice and the funny things he would say.

Cynthia Holden(3rd Grade Teacher):

Daniel enjoyed and excelled in math, especially problem solving. He absolutely loved to read. Even while Daniel was doing his balancing-chair act, he would always know exactly what page and problem we were on during class. Daniel always seemed to enjoy his days with an upbeat attitude. I like to think of Daniel and smile because he brought such happiness and laughter to so many lives he touched. Daniel was an amazing child who will always have a special place in my heart.

Stacey Douglas (Friend’s mom):

Daniel was a good friend to my son as well as a good soccer player. I enjoyed coaching him because he would always come up with new drills from books he had read. His bright eyes had always made me smile and I know that not only did Daniel's parents loose a great son, but our children and community lost a great friend as well. Our prayers go out to you and your family Daniel, and I know that we will all miss you greatly. You were truely taken too early from all of us! We miss you.

Willian Dai (best friend):

Daniel-
You are one of a kind,
One that I’ll never find
Again.

Abhiram Ilindra (Best Friend):

I am sorry about Daniel. I miss him too and wish he could be back here. He was smart and funny.
One of the times that he showed this was when we were taking a test. It was in 3rd grade. Ms. Holden passed out the test. Then, Ms. Holden gave instructions. As she did so, Daniel did the test. He was on his way to turn in the test, when Swati said, "Ms.Holden, Daniel's already done" Then, while we took the test, Daniel got to read.

Lauren Hutchison(Classmate):

I am very sorry for your lost. It was great to be in his class because if you were having a bad day he would make you laugh in class. I had so many great times with him, he would turn my frown upside down. You were very lucky to keep him for the past 11 years.

Isabella Fernandes(Friend's mom):

My son Daniel Fernandes and myself will always remember Daniel Pan as a enthusiastic and helpful child, who took him around the school on his first Day in 2nd Grade when Miss Mangini was his teacher. The gates of Heaven were opened and will always be open on Good Friday. "You are smiling up in Heaven as you always do. We'll miss you" Daniel we will visit you when our time.

Jasmine Dohemann(Friend):

As friends of the Pan family, it broke our hearts to hear Daniel was dead. Daniel used to come to my mom's Chinese school. He always had his head in a book, and was highly intelligent. He will always be in our hearts, and we know that Jesus and God will take good care of him. We will truly miss him.

Daniel Aziz(Classmate):

It is still hard for me to believe that Daniel Pan will not be in my class anymore. Daniel was a great person and he always made us laugh in the class.

Lauryn Mellberg(Classmate):

Daniel was a great friend and always had a smile on his face! He was a very bright student. One of my favorite memories was on Colonial day. My grandma was helping and he sat right in front of her. He was taking to her and she told me that he made her day extra-special! When my mom told her about what happened she was devastated.

Kara Guse(Classmate):

At Montevideo School, it is not going to be the same without Daniel. He was always happy and always makes jokes in school that makes everyone laugh. He loves to read for every time the teacher is talking, he would always be reading a book. In his whole life, he probably read a million pages! Daniel is very smart for he is in 6th grade math class and one time in 3rd grade, he finished a test in about 3 minutes! But mostly, Daniel is always happy, and I’m sure he’s in a better place now.

Kasidej Sooksomporn(Classmate):

When I came to the school my third friend was Daniel (in third grade). We played together many days. In fourth grade Daniel always have a book with him. He would have a great future anywhere he is.
